Liberia’s National Public Health Institute (NPHIL) has confirmed 25 active cases of Mpox as authorities intensify efforts to curb the spread of the virus. This puts the total number of confirmed cases at 102, following NPHIL's recent updates. NPHIL has confirmed a total of 676 suspected Mpox cases nationwide between January 1, 2024, and May 22, 2025.
Of these, 596 samples were tested, resulting in 102 laboratory-confirmed cases across 15 counties3.
At a Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) press conference, NPHIL Director General Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan reported that while cases have risen, there have been no deaths, and urged the public to adhere to preventive measures like regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with suspected cases, and promptly reporting symptoms to health authorities3.
Dr. Nyan also called on the media to help disseminate accurate information and counter misinformation, emphasizing that public vigilance and cooperation are crucial to controlling the outbreak3.
Liberia’s response to Mpox is expected to draw on hard-won lessons from past health crises, including the 2014–2015 Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, which shaped the country’s approach to disease response and community engagement567.
During Ebola, Liberia’s health system struggled with overwhelmed facilities and shortages, but the experience led to the development of a robust community health workforce and improved emergency protocols57. When COVID-19 emerged, Liberia implemented early border screenings, rapid deployment of contact tracers, and prioritized essential health services, earning international recognition for its resilience and adaptability67.
NPHIL reiterated its commitment to transparency and community engagement as key pillars in the fight against Mpox, urging the public to remain calm and follow official health guidelines3.
