MONROVIA, Oct 25 — Liberia’s health authorities have raised an alert over a sharp rise in seasonal flu cases threatening to strain the country’s fragile health system.

The Ministry of Health said children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic conditions face the greatest risk of severe illness.

“This flu season is moving faster than usual,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Catherine Thomas-Cooper said. “Communities must act early — wash hands, wear masks, and stay home when sick.”

The government has increased disease surveillance and launched a public information drive through radio, schools, and roadside speakers. In coordination with the Education Ministry, schools are now required to carry out hygiene checks and provide handwashing stations.

Liberia is no stranger to health emergencies, but the surge in flu cases stresses the ongoing strain on a system still recovering from years of crisis. Clinics that once fought Ebola and COVID-19 now face renewed pressure from a common threat — and fewer resources than before.

Officials say the situation remains under control but warn that individual caution is the country’s best defense.
