LTA Boss Suspended Over L$260 Million and US$450K Audit Scandal: Genuine Accountability or Political Smokescreen?

Liberia’s President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has abruptly suspended Abdullah L. Kamara, Acting Chairman of the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA). Officially, the action follows a damning General Auditing Commission report that traces more than two hundred sixty million Liberian dollars and nearly half a million US dollars—public funds—into the accounts of TAMMA Corporation and 231 Data Incorporated, all without so much as a signed contract or procurement record .
But many critical minds are questioning whether this is a genuine stand for accountability or a calculated maneuver to shield the administration from more recent, and perhaps more troubling, revelations of corruption. The GAC’s findings show grave financial irregularities, missing documentation, and a paper trail that evaporates at every turn . Yet, the timing of Kamara’s suspension has raised more eyebrows than it has reassured the public. For months, whispers of impropriety have swirled around the LTA and its leadership, but it is only now—amid mounting political pressure and speculation about deeper rot within the system—that the President has wielded the axe.
Critics argue that Kamara’s removal is less about cleaning house and more about rearranging the furniture, a convenient scapegoat offered up as evidence of reform while the real issue that triggered it remains unspoken. The Executive Mansion’s statement, heavy on the language of transparency and integrity, insists that Kamara’s suspension is a necessary step to uphold public trust . Yet, the justification seems less genuine and not many critical minds are buying it.
For now, the numbers—L$262,844,500 and US$450,000—speak volumes, but the silence surrounding more recent scandals may prove even more telling.
