ECOBANK CCTV Footage Stirs Public Doubt After Rare Armed Robbery

Liberia has seen its share of drama, but broad daylight bank robberies are almost unheard of. That changed on August 6, 2025, when police arrested Emery Johnson—an assistant lecturer at the University of Liberia—at the 11th Street premises of ECOBANK Liberia. According to police spokeswoman Cecelia Clarke, Johnson admitted to the crime and now faces court. However, as the facts pile up, so do the questions, fueled by viral reactions to the bank’s CCTV footage.
While police say the ECOBANK video backs up their account, many Liberians aren’t convinced. The skepticism is driven by sharp-eyed viewers who note some odd details. Johnson’s clothes at the time of arrest—a black hoodie, army green shirt, and white underwear—don’t fully match the outfit in the CCTV footage. The green shirt goes missing, and the hoodie seems different. Even more puzzling, in the video, despite the alleged gun being present, the female bank staffer doesn’t appear afraid. She is seen wearing sunglasses and fighting back against the alleged attacker, without the usual signs of fear a weapon might provoke.
These discrepancies have set off a flurry of doubt. Some social media users openly suspect the footage was tampered with and point to the mismatch in clothing and behavior patterns as proof. The question lingers: if the doubts have merit, why would the bank want to alter the video at all? Police and the bank maintain their version: Johnson, masked and hooded, carried a shotgun and tried to rob the bank, but the quick response of staff and officers foiled his attack. For now, the court will decide his fate.
Daylight armed robbery is a rare shock for Monrovia, and ECOBANK’s footage was supposed to settle the story. Instead, it has deepened the mystery, leaving Liberia’s public watching, asking, and wondering what really happened inside those bank walls.
