Liberia National Police (LNP) has confirmed that the late Cletus Noah will not be buried until a full autopsy is completed, following a letter from former Maritime Commissioner Eugene Nagbe, who formally requested an independent investigation into Noah’s sudden death, citing grave and unsubstantiated allegations made against him and former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah by Noah’s brother, Caine Tozo124.
Cletus Noah, who served as Chief of Office Staff to former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah, died unexpectedly at St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital in Monrovia, with his death certificate citing cardiac arrest as the cause15. His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from across the political spectrum, with tributes emphasizing his loyalty, mentorship, and personal warmth. However, the circumstances of his death have become the subject of intense speculation, particularly after Tozo accused both Nagbe and Tweah of involvement, claims that have not been substantiated by any evidence234.
In an exclusive interview conducted by Kelvin Demey on Prime FM, Mr. Simeon Frank, a senior official of the LNP, confirmed live on air that the police have issued a directive to St. Moses Funeral Home to halt all embalmment activities on Noah’s remains. This move, he explained, is to preserve the integrity of the body for a comprehensive autopsy, which authorities hope will provide scientific clarity and dispel the swirling rumors of foul play5. The police’s intervention follows Nagbe’s insistence that only a thorough, transparent investigation can establish the facts and bring closure to both the bereaved family and those implicated by public suspicion14.
Eugene Nagbe, in his correspondence with the police, emphasized the seriousness of the accusations made by Tozo, who contacted him via WhatsApp with claims and threats. Nagbe has submitted transcripts and evidence of these communications to the authorities, citing the personal and reputational risks posed by such allegations234. He has publicly welcomed the police investigation, stating that he is prepared to cooperate fully and that only an objective, scientific process can determine the truth behind Noah’s death14.
However, Cletus Noah’s lawyer and former Deputy DEA boss, Gbawuo Kowo, has challenged the legal authority of the police’s directive. Kowo stated that while the police can request an autopsy, burial is a matter of legal rights and cannot be interfered with without a court order. He emphasized that unless the family is served with an order from a court of competent jurisdiction, the police pronouncement has no legal effect, and burial arrangements may proceed as planned. Observers now look forward to the Police response to this latest position from the deceased’s lawyer.
As the investigation unfolds, the LNP has called for patience and restraint from the public, urging against the spread of unverified information. The outcome of the autopsy and police inquiry is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the concerns around Noah's death.
