Gbeisay orders GAC to audit Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh’s Bench!

At the formal opening of the Supreme Court’s October Term on Monday, newly appointed Chief Justice Yarmie Gbeisay ordered the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to audit his immediate predecessor Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh’s tenure—a decision delivered in the presence of Yuoh herself and fellow former chief justices Francis Korkpor and Frances Johnson Morris, among other legal dignitaries.
Gbeisay, a long-serving member of the Supreme Court bench, announced the audit as his own tenure comes under increased scrutiny. In recent weeks, Gbeisay faced widespread criticism after recommending his son for a magistrate post—a move many saw as nepotistic and at odds with anti-graft efforts in the judiciary.
The audit targets only Yuoh’s period as Chief Justice, not those of earlier leaders. The decision prompted critics to question whether the probe represents genuine reform or selective accountability.
Some legal analysts suggest the move could be an attempt to deflect attention from Gbeisay’s own controversies or undermine his predecessor’s legacy.
Sources with knowledge of Supreme Court discussions say Yuoh may welcome the audit, hoping it will end speculation about her tenure and reinforce her commitment to transparent leadership.
However, previous court clean-up efforts have often lost momentum as they neared politically connected justices, fueling skepticism about whether this initiative will mark a break from tradition.
The Supreme Court has yet to comment on whether audits will extend to other former benches. The effectiveness of Liberian judicial reforms remains in doubt as the institution confronts new and old questions over integrity and impartiality.
