The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) is rolling out Operation True Guardian, a bold initiative aimed at bolstering national security and restoring public trust. Set to kick off in Western Liberia at the end of March 2025, this operation targets the country's porous borders and crime-ridden coastal waters, where transnational crimes and maritime piracy have become endemic. Liberia is grappling with a complex array of security challenges, including cross-border smuggling, human trafficking, and illicit drug trade, exacerbated by the lack of effective border control, which has emboldened criminal groups and led to fear and tension in border communities.


The coastal waters are also plagued by maritime crimes such as illegal fishing and piracy, which not only threaten local livelihoods but also deplete Liberia's marine resources4. Operation True Guardian must therefore be assessed in the context of these multifaceted challenges and the AFL's capacity to address them effectively.


The AFL's objectives for Operation True Guardian are commendable, focusing on strengthening border security, enhancing maritime surveillance, and deterring illegal activities through proactive community engagement.
