Zimi‑Bamballa Public School in Grand Cape Mount County reported 26 pregnancies among female students in 2024. This exposes the depth of Liberia’s rural teenage pregnancy crisis. The perpetrators are varied: classmates who become fathers in the absence of sexual health education and protection, teachers and school staff—those meant to guide—are often named in statutory rape reports, with more than a third of such cases linked to school adults. Outside school, older men—so-called “sponsors,” casual laborers, and respected community figures—leverage poverty, offering money, gifts, or school fee payments for sex. In many villages, such transactions are seen as normal, reflecting the impact of economic desperation.
