Zimi‑Bamballa Public School in Grand Cape Mount County reported 26 pregnancies among female students in 2024. This exposes the depth of Liberia’s rural teenage pregnancy crisis. The perpetrators are varied: classmates who become fathers in the absence of sexual health education and protection, teachers and school staff—those meant to guide—are often named in statutory rape reports, with more than a third of such cases linked to school adults. Silence persists, as most girls never report abuse, fearing retaliation and apathy.academic.oup+1

Outside school, older men—so-called “sponsors,” casual laborers, and respected community figures—leverage poverty, offering money, gifts, or school fee payments for sex. In many villages, such transactions are seen as normal, reflecting the impact of economic desperation.

42% of adolescent girls in Liberia’s rural counties become mothers, nearly twice the figure seen in urban zones. Weak law enforcement, a lack of reproductive health services, and entrenched gender roles leave many girls exposed.

The truth is, the impregnators are fellow students, teachers, and other men in the community. As long as poverty, unsafe schools, and a culture of impunity persist, schools like Zimi‑Bamballa will continue to see numbers that demand national outrage.

Data on similar cases in a few counties:

  • Bong County: Nearly 75% of births at some clinics are to teenagers; more than 3,500 teen pregnancies were recorded in two years.liberianinvestigator+1

  • Rivercess County: Over 50% of adolescent girls have begun childbearing; 7 in 10 pregnant women at clinics are under 18.knewsonline+1

  • Gbarpolu County: Teenage pregnancy is widespread; 15% of women report violence during pregnancy.thecompassforsbc+1

These numbers reflect a crisis that is urgent, pervasive, and demands action.
