Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), led by Commander-in-Chief Emmanuel Gonquoi, has issued a direct warning to President Boakai’s Unity Party government. Declaring, “The sleepy lion is not a dead lion,” Gonquoi accused the administration of squandering its two-year mandate and failing to deliver for ordinary Liberians12.

In his statement at the commissioning ceremony for Montserrado County district leadership, Gonquoi made it clear that the EFFL is preparing to re-enter the political arena with renewed vigor. “We are not afraid of the Liberia National Police, the AFL, or even the NSA,” he said, dismissing any notion that state security forces could intimidate the movement into silence. “Working in your government does not mean we are silent; we are watching you, Mr. President”12.

Gonquoi’s frustration was palpable as he described a government growing increasingly aloof and unresponsive. “Whenever we pick up our phones and call a minister, they do not bother to answer our calls. But very soon, we will be coming for them”1.

The EFFL, established as a pressure group in 2019 by Gonquoi as a subchapter of the EFF in South Africa, sharply critiqued the CDC-led government before transitioning into a political party officially accredited by the NEC in 2023 and endorsing the Boakai presidency3. Gonquoi was awarded a deputy minister position, which he rejected, and rumors have it that he took a director position at the National Port Authority instead45. With this latest ultimatum, Gonquoi signals his readiness to challenge the Unity Party’s grip on power and mobilize public dissent12.

As the Unity Party marks two years in office, the EFFL’s warning lands as both a challenge and a promise: the era of quiet discontent may be ending, and a new wave of political confrontation could be on the horizon12.
