Stop Daydreaming and Level-up: CMC Snubs Unity Party’s Call

MONROVIA, Aug 20 – Liberia’s opposition Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) on Wednesday dismissed overtures from the ruling Unity Party (UP), rejecting the prospect of talks and reaffirming its mission to confront the government it accuses of betrayal and misrule.
“The CMC cannot and will not engage in any dialogue with the UP—a party notorious for so recklessly betraying Liberians’ dreams and aspirations,” the movement said in a statement. The declaration followed comments by UP chairman who said his party was open to dialogue with opponents in the interest of national unity.
CMC argued that the ruling party had misunderstood the very premise of its existence. “The Citizens Movement for Change was founded with a single objective: To challenge the misrule of the forces represented by the UP,” it said.
Addressing the UP leader directly, the statement added: “Stop daydreaming and level up. Liberians have long woken up and parted ways with the UP. That reality cannot be changed by wishful thinking.”
The movement left little room for compromise, charging that the UP’s past record of “corruption, deception, and abuse” made any talks impossible. Engaging with the ruling party, CMC said, would betray the sacrifices underpinning its political mission.
Analysts said the rejection illustrates how sharply divided Liberia’s political arena remains, with four years still to go before the next presidential election. The confrontation signals the absence of consensus at a time when the country faces persistent economic strain and public anger over official corruption.
With the UP seeking to cast itself as conciliatory and the CMC entrenched in its opposition, the gulf between the two risks hardening further. Whether the ruling party adjusts course in light of the rebuff remains unclear, but CMC’s posture suggests its strategy is less about dialogue than about building a platform of disruption and resistance.
