Monrovia, Oct. 6 – The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), now Liberia’s largest opposition force, will break ground on its new headquarters on October 18 in Congo Town, Monrovia, the party’s construction committee chair announced Monday, unveiling an unusually diverse donor pool driving the party’s comeback.
In a revelation that has captured widespread attention, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, chair of the CDC Headquarters Construction Committee, disclosed during a press conference that a striking 18 percent of contributors to the CDC project are members of the ruling Unity Party—an unexpected and significant cross-party endorsement. “Eighteen percent of contributors to our Party Headquarters project are members of the ruling Unity Party,” Koffa emphasized.
CDC loyalists make up the largest donor segment, accounting for 52 percent. The remainder of support comes from independents, other opposition figures, and anonymous donors.
The new headquarters—set opposite the Greater Refuge Church—signals CDC’s determination to solidify its organizational infrastructure after its former base was demolished over a month ago in what the party has characterized as a politically motivated act by the ruling Unity Party. Officials frame the October 18 ceremony as both a renewal and a demonstration of CDC’s resolve.
The event is expected to gather party leaders, opposition figures, and stakeholders, telling CDC’s determination to remain a dominant force in Liberian politics—bolstered, notably, by the surprising backing of Unity Party contributors.
