Henry Costa, one of Liberia’s most mercurial political figures and controversial talk show hosts, has publicly reversed his stance on one of the country’s most divisive issues: presidential use of private jets. In a candid Facebook podcast Friday evening, Costa offered a rare apology to former President George Weah, admitting that his earlier attacks on Weah’s travel choices were misguided.

“I was wrong, President Weah was right!” Costa declared to his audience. “Flying private isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for a sitting president. I regret ever criticizing him for that”12.

Costa’s mea culpa comes amid a growing trend among Liberian political figures who once lambasted Weah for what they called extravagant and insensitive leadership. Montserrado Senator Abraham Darius Dillon recently issued a similar apology, acknowledging he had underestimated the logistical and security challenges of presidential travel3.

The shift in tone comes as the realities of governance clash with rhetoric that once defined opposition campaigns. For many Liberians, the apologies raise uncomfortable questions about the sincerity of political discourse and the ease with which principles are traded for pragmatism.

Critics argue that while security and efficiency are legitimate concerns, the optics of private jet travel remain troubling in a country where basic services are underfunded and poverty is widespread. The reversal by figures like Costa and Dillon justifies the hypocrisy and controversy in Liberia's body politic4.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the controversy over presidential privilege is far from resolved, and the line between necessity and excess remains as contested as ever.
