Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed during a public speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, police and university officials said.

Kirk, 31, was addressing an outdoor campus gathering shortly after midday when a single gunshot struck him. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but Kirk was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, authorities confirmed. His wife and children were present at the event, according to those close to the family.

Local police locked down the university while federal agents joined the investigation. No motive for the shooting had been announced by late Wednesday, and the suspect’s identity was not immediately released. Young people fled in panic as the scene unfolded, according to eyewitnesses.

Kirk rose to national prominence for his divisive commentaries and role in mobilizing conservative youth on college campuses. His death sparked responses across the political spectrum, with supporters mourning the loss and opponents expressing shock at the escalation of political violence in the United States.

Utah Valley University suspended all further events for the evening while the investigation continued. The campus, normally bustling with student activity, remained under lockdown as authorities collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
