MONROVIA — Liberia’s Civil Law Court has reportedly erred a second time against the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in its recent ruling on eviction against the lead opposition political party led by former President George Weah.

Similar to the current ruling, the court in 2024 attempted to enforce a 2016 eviction judgment against the CDC—a decision the Supreme Court later declared moot. After the Supreme Court’s intervention, the CDC and the property owner began discussions regarding a purchase based on a right of first refusal that had been granted to the political party. However, while talks were underway, the owner reportedly withdrew, a move some allege was influenced by the ruling Unity Party regime123.

As a result, the CDC filed a lawsuit for specific performance, citing its investment in the property and its landlord-tenant relationship with the owner.

According to former Information Minister and Maritime Boss Lenn Eugene Nagbe, the CDC has invested over $1million in the property and still has multiple legal options available456.

The CDC is now filing an appeal to the Supreme Court to leverage the legal protections it believes the law affords.

Amid these, disturbing observations from the courtroom have emerged. Our reporters witnessed the presiding judge openly jabbing and mocking the CDC—a conduct legal scholars deem a violation of judicial ethics and a threat to the appearance of impartiality789. Such behavior has fueled public concern, raising fears that the courts may be placing political interests above the rule of law.

With public trust on the line, all eyes now turn to Liberia’s highest court to see if it can uphold the rule of law over political influence.
